Students, Jobs and Universities of India - Has it become a joke?

Are you too one among those who have been given the advice of becoming a doctor or engineer? If the answer is yes, you have been sold a piece of advice that is worthless. This also states your level of submissiveness towards the baseless advice that we get randomly from family, relatives, and teachers.

But what is that they tend to only give just 2 options which are either a doctor or an engineer? There are tons of different things, right? Like Digital marketing, creative arts, becoming a writer or a publisher, speaker, teacher or trainer, getting into sales, the entertainment industry and so many more.

In this blog, we'll talk about education, how it started and what happened in such a way that there is chaos across the country which is leading to stagnant growth and unemployment too.

When I started asking people as to how education started as per their knowledge if they knew, they were of opinion that,  in olden days when people started realizing the urge of education for their children and society they made their religious institutions into study rooms where people were taught. The then scholars and priests became the professors and society became students.

Going back to the 4th century BC, the world's first university Platonic Academy by Plato was started in Greece with the vision of educating people on life and law with addition to concepts and techniques of knowing one's self and how to live mutually co-exist in society.

And the attitude of people started changing towards this type of education channel and hence newer streams like technology, sciences, and arts started gaining prominence.

Those in such ages started digging deeper and founded wonderful concepts and theories which we today live. Some of those concepts and theories are Chemistry Astronomy, Economics, Mathematics, and Geography. That's why some of the people of those times are called Fathers of such theories. Some of the prominent people include Socrates,  Adam Smith, Aristotle, Plato, and many others accordingly such streams were periodically converted to deliver eminent skills or information.

The names of these concepts and people are still discussed in education to date across the world.

Same religious universities went to become universities delivering such education or concepts and went to form professional universities by the then kings or rulers or governments and in 11th to 12th century BC such universities started providing professional degrees and one such oldest university is the University of Bolognia and then started the democratization of education to everyone which led people to get educated.

Although it's tough to believe that universities started to make people realize about themselves, self-identity and understanding but the times have changed now.

Desperate times and desperate measures. In today's time in Indian Universities degrees are earned on the basis of by-hearting the syllabus and just for the sake of passing, to find a job, to get married in a better place and in fact the times are so desperate that people even look at the degrees as a qualification criteria to be mentioned on the invitation card for show off. That's it.

Talking about universities and degrees in India the oldest university to be established in British India was the University of Madras in 1857 and others being the University of Calcutta and Mumbai and Delhi too. considered to be the best universities to date and the passouts to be considered top-notch.

Indian Government in order to extend the reach of education to potential students expanded massively and democratized education at a scale that gave birth of no. of colleges and universities but at the cost of quality. Although India is still an attractive destiny for international students ut only in some spheres like building language, Management education, etc that too from prestigious universities like mentioned above.

Today aspirants learn only for only getting degrees in hand and just remained as a status symbol for most of the audience and for seeking education which it is intended to.

In India, the cost of getting an education from a good college is anywhere above Rs. 10 lakh.

In almost 90% of the cases, people could not afford such a high-class education and in another scenario, most of the people don't even know that such institutes or universities exist.

Although be it a top university or a normal college education prescribed by the government is one and the same. The challenge here is that students are taught so many subjects in their 3/4 years of college that students lack the basic ability to grasp that knowledge which has a led to the failure of 55% of graduates this year in Bcom, BSc BBA and related bachelors fields and similar is the case with engineering. In addition to that 35% of the students failed in intermediate too. The national average stands at 22% in case of failed candidates in India.

What happens is that the stress that builds up mounts so high that students are not able to cope up and in order to assemble in the culture these students start losing their shine and feel underconfident deserted and hopeless. During this tenure, the most important skills that are useful in life and in practical scenarios just remain unlearned. That's how we become the jack of all trades and master of none.

That's why it's said to choose the field which you love and similar is the reason why good universities shortlist admissions through entrance examinations because at least students should have basic minimum knowledge for survival.

As per IMF and other organizations close to 7% of the population is unemployed which is a result of many things but the most important thing that these unemployed grads lack is a requirement of basic skills.

Is it that the degrees we earn are of no use if we lack in basic skills which would help us find jobs?

That's not true, as skills are important for professional life, similarly, degrees are important too.

Let's not forget that education shapes our attitude, attitude need not be lost and you have to make the most of it and in such a way the degrees earned from your 3/4 years of education will definitely help in your professional life in some way might be today or tomorrow, maybe day after tomorrow too. But it'll be useful for sure if you don't lose the attitude you gained from your education.

And don't forget that this is the same education or attitude which makes you different from others.

That said, consistently developing your own skills is never less than a degree. If studies from leading universities are to be believed we just spend 25% of our life on learning these skills and the remaining 75% life spent by basing the learned skills as a foundation. Such as skills like time management, Analytical and logical skills, communication speaking and writing ability stress and conflict management too.

These skills are not only helpful in personal life but form a crucial role in professional life too.

Success is never far away when you're following your passion and not just the trend set by a society which creates differences between you and your strengths. To find out your strengths and passion and follow it. If possible regularly do a SWOT analysis for self.

It might be difficult to find your strengths too, but it's easy to find out too. Brains are divided into 2 parts left part and the right part.

The people who have left part of brain stronger tend to have better analytical and logical skills, to be liking structured work and easily fit into the culture of the organizations

The people who have the right part of the brain stronger tend to be artistic and prefer to work in free spaces.

Based on the above difference you can tend to find your strength and choose a career wisely.

Unfortunately, the education system that India has tends to be producing a workforce that is better at the left side of the brain where creativity and innovation ability is too less.

in changing industry times, the demand for creativity and innovation is gaining a toll with logical and analytical ability too because, According to WEF's Future of Jobs Report predicts creativity, innovation, and ideation will be key skills for the workforce of the future.

Students will not able to stand out if Failing to use these both skills i.e. analytical skills and creativity would result in n being incompetent and just remain aback in the professional society too.

Industries keep on changing and it tends to be better consistently. If we have a brief look at history 4 revolutions have taken place till now which is known as industrial revolutions. Each revolution intended to be better.

1st industrial revolution was the introduction of steam and machinery tools, railroad

2nd industrial revolution was the introduction of electricity, oil and gas and telephone,

3rd industrial revolution was the introduction of computers electronics and renewable energy

4th industrial revolution is the introduction of digitization which makes the present computerized process to be effective and the market becoming dynamic

But how is it related to all the things which we read above? Does it make any sense?

Yes, it does!

Because it's like a railway station where the train has left the station very fast and the passengers remained stranded on the platform.

The industry is moving forward and education is still backward there is no momentum to catch up to the industry's speed. It creates a lot of confusion as to how to hop on to the industry where they reject to accept talent which is outdated.

But, how do we match that gap between education and industry performance?

- Revision of the present curriculum to mitigate the difference between the industry's demand and graduate skills. Last time it was revised in 2005. Whereas in developed countries it is revised every 3 years which has helped them launch a variety of innovative courses. And its set to get revised this year if all goes well. It'll be after 15 years since past revision.

Although based on the above facts and writings, not all lies in the hands of governments or industries a large amount of responsibility lies in our hands only. The ability to understand the current trend and preparing for such jobs with a mastered skillset is a must.

Since the 4th industrial revolution is here, industries are becoming digitized each day.

Industries like E-commerce, Digital Media, Analytics, Social sectors, history, anthropology, linguistics,  are booming and opportunity is enormous in these cases as it is being disrupted through innovations fuelled by thousands of jobs. For getting the task done is important as said in this blog, time management communication, stress, and conflict management form a crucial role wherever you go.

But upgrading your skills from various resources is a must and should. Like the mobile apps which upgrade every day. Each upgraded app gives lightning experience and superior service impacting our thinking with satisfaction. The same is the case with upgrading our skills.

Like breathing stops heartbeat stops, similarly, careers also stops if skills are not upgraded. Tons of resources are available to learn, now is the time where education is just at the click of a button, unlike early days where people have to travel miles to attend college. Make the best use of technology and weave your dreams.

Keep learning because it boosts confidence and creates internal happiness !
