Made a wrong career choice? or is it just lack of Focus?

You are either a student wanting to make the right career choice, or you are a professional who has already made a career choice ?

When we are young, we have options.

We can decide to do engineering or become a doctor or become a CA or become a lawyer.

If you choose engineering, then there are multiple areas of study.

But once you graduate from college, and get into a job, it might look like your career choices are limited. It is difficult to go back and choose another area of study after spending years learning one thing.

For example, once you graduate as an engineer, there is a very less chance that you will become a doctor in your life by doing MBBS.

And all of us wonder... have we made the right career choice by going through the entrance of the situation.

Does our career success and life success depend on what choice we made?

Should we have chosen something else in our lives? And is it too late now?

Thinking about it, I formed an opinion that it doesn't really matter what you have chosen!

Because there is no right answer to it.

Many things in our life happen by a chance.

For example, I learned commerce out of no options or no interests in learning then.

I learned commerce because my dad ran a business which I was also a part of and but didn't had a clear focus as to where it would lead me.

During my free time in college days, I used to spend my time sitting at various places and see how the business is going on in shops to understand the expectations of the customers. I used to learn their strategies and understand as to why they do this way. Over a span of 2 years, I started giving suggestions naturally to some vendors near my house and knowing most of the food habits across my colony I suggested the vegetable vendors not to invest on vegetables which are rare as people will not buy it. His investment of Rs 4000 in 2009 became a bad debt and he had to bear the losses. He shared his experience with some other shop owners and some of them used to offer free biscuit packets to know which biscuits to stock up and across products like pens, grains, notebook brands to name a few.

During this time I helped my friends who had failed in college with their father's business and they got very good business with my digital marketing skills. Their fathers were carpenters, plumbers, electricians etc.

Then I became a digital marketer and did not deviate from it

If I did not have helped them with, I might never have become a digital marketer with sound business knowledge as I used to suggest those shop owners.

If I had become an architect, a civil engineer or an interior designer, and then after 5 years tried to switch to digital marketing, I might not have been successful in both fields.

If I had chosen to become a civil engineer, and worked on it for 3-5 years, it would make sense to focus on it, and continue doing the same until the compounded results of focusing on one thing start coming.

It doesn't matter which career path you choose - what matters is that - are you sticking with one thing for long enough time to make your career successful.

Since I grew my digital marketing skills for 4 years, it made sense to focus on digital marketing to continue further.

Because for anyone else to catch up with me, they need to invest those 4 years of time and people don't have that kind of time lying around with busy professional and personal lives. That's an unfair advantage that I have, and I should bank on it.

So if you are not so sure about making the perfect career choice, don't worry too much about it.

There are too many career options in the world, but I can talk only about very few careers.

Within any sector, just choose one area or specialization

Anything that you feel interests you.

It could be:

- SEO
- Google Ads
- Facebook Ads
- Email Marketing
- Social Media Marketing
- Creating digital marketing funnels
- Conversion rate optimization
- Video Marketing
- Content marketing

- Increasing engagement rates on social platforms
- Media Plans
- General Knowledge
- Advertising

...and the list goes on.

Learn a bit of everything, but focus on one area and keep learning things in that area.

For example, if you choose SEO, then become an SEO expert by learning about SEO for a long time.

For anyone to become an expert in an industry and have an amazing career, I recommend focusing 10 years on one subject.

If you focus on one subject for 10 years, then you will become a top 1% expert in the world in that subject.

If you think SEO is broad, then narrow your focus.

You can become an SEO expert for just e-commerce companies or healthcare sector or create courses on it or implement various black hat and white had techniques and what not.

If you build your expertise for a long enough time on one specific area, let's say SEO for e-commerce companies, then the top e-commerce companies in the world will hire you for your knowledge and expertise.

You will be able to get an amazing job, or start a consulting company that serves other e-commerce companies by helping them with SEO.

If you spend 10 years in one field, you will have so much knowledge that you will be able to write a book about it.

A book will reinforce your personal brand and expert image and your career opportunities will compound from there.

So decide on an area where you think that there is an overlap of your passion, talent, and market opportunity. And stick to it for 10 years minimum.

I am confident that you will get abundance in your career at some point in the future.

All you need is FOCUS.

Don't worry too much about whether you have made the right career choice.

Just pick an area and focus on becoming an expert in that area like there no other person which people to relate to.

The people who get paid the most have specialized knowledge.

Think about it.

Who earns more?

A general doctor, or a neuro surgeon?

The more specific and deeper you go, the more rare you will become, and the more you will get paid for your skills.

Also, as you focus on one thing and stick to one thing, your competition disappears. And yes there happens to be no competition, its just our opinions we build up and keep thinking about it.

Many people in the world keep switching from one thing to another.

They don't focus on one topic for a long enough time to become an expert in it.

If you spend more than 5 years in one area of work and expertise, the number of people who have spent 5 years in one area, and the people who will continue to focus on the same thing for another 5 years is extremely low. Because people find it very hard to concentrate, find it boring doing the same task, may not feel worth the time and efficiency to invest perhaps.

Pick up anything which you see usually, there is a worthy name in that specific sector. Have you ever heard of Eric Schmidt?? Probably not. People know Larry Page and Sergey Brin as founders of Google but the person who made that idea successful was Eric Schmidt who was CEO of Google as a startup and made it into a complete product. Have you ever heard of this name Ingvar Kamprad? he is the founder of IKEA world's largest furniture company from Sweden which doesn't have a debt to expand their business.

The most common thing these both individuals have in common is FOCUS. They focused on their businesses completely that they didn't let any other unrelated thoughts come into their way. One company went on to become a technological conglomerate and another one became furniture giant to which there no competition yet. See, that's the worthiness of Focus, it never gets you off track.

That way you will be able to stand out in the market easier and easier over time just because no one can match your focus and consistency. It takes 7 years for a mango tree to become fruitful and a years were invested to make Burj Khalifa.

I hope this gave you some clarity about making the right career choices in life.

Remember, there is no right choice.

Just pick one and make it right with FOCUS.

Do you think you will focus on one thing and become an expert in one area?

Are you ready to get that kind of focus in your life?
